Exchange withdrawal blocked: self-hosted wallet verification

If a send sits on “Awaiting wallet verification”, “Prove ownership”, “Travel Rule details” or “Verify destination”, the exchange is usually waiting for a self-hosted ownership check — not freezing your account at random.

Never share recovery words or private keys. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.

Why withdrawals stop

Under the EU Transfer of Funds Regulation (EU) 2023/1113, crypto-asset service providers must collect information on transfers and, for self-hosted wallets above €1,000, take measures to verify that the customer owns or controls the address. Other jurisdictions (for example Australia under AUSTRAC Travel Rule guidance, or Luno markets in South Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia) impose similar information or ownership steps. When there is no other exchange to message, you become the source of that proof.

Exchanges implement this differently: message signing, Satoshi / small-deposit tests, screenshots, or declarations. Method overview: How to prove wallet ownership. Background: Why is my exchange asking me to verify my wallet?.

What to do right now

  1. Stay inside the official exchange app or website domain. Close any third-party “message generator” that asks for a seed phrase.
  2. Open the pending withdrawal / deposit and read which method is offered.
  3. Prefer message signing when available (usually no network fee). Otherwise send the exact Satoshi-test amount from the exact address, or complete the declaration fields accurately.
  4. After success, start a new withdrawal to the same verified address if the exchange asks you to (common on Kraken and similar flows).
  5. Optional: paste a signature into the KeyProof verifier to re-check it locally before you trust a prompt.

Scam patterns while you are blocked

  • “Support” DMs that need your seed, remote desktop, or a fee to “release” the withdrawal.
  • Sites that “generate” a Travel Rule signature for you after you paste recovery words.
  • Lookalike domains. Confirm the URL matches the exchange’s published help center.

FAQ

Why is my withdrawal stuck on “verify wallet”?

Regulated exchanges often pause self-hosted withdrawals until you prove you control the destination address (Travel Rule / transfer-of-funds rules). Finish the ownership step shown in the app, then retry or wait for the transfer to clear.

Will verifying unlock my deposit too?

Often yes for deposits held for Travel Rule. Complete the same ownership or sender-details prompt. See your exchange guide for deposit-specific steps.

Do I need to share my seed phrase?

No. Legitimate flows use message signing, a small exact test deposit, a screenshot of the wallet UI, or an ownership declaration — never recovery words or private keys.

Need every guide unlocked?

KeyProof Pro unlocks the full exchange matrix and keeps the browser-local signature verifier. See pricing — $9/mo or $79/yr. Crypto checkout via AnonPay is also available on the pricing page.
