Why is my exchange asking me to verify my wallet?

If a withdrawal or deposit suddenly stops with “verify your wallet”, “prove ownership” or “Travel Rule details”, the exchange is usually following transfer-of-funds rules for self-hosted addresses — not accusing you of fraud.

Never share recovery words or private keys. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.

The short answer

Regulated crypto platforms must collect information about who sends and receives crypto transfers. When the other side is a self-hosted (unhosted) wallet you control, there is no other exchange to message — so your platform asks you to confirm the address is yours. In the EU, Regulation (EU) 2023/1113 ties an ownership-verification duty to self-hosted transfers above €1,000. Australia’s AUSTRAC guidance similarly requires VASPs to collect payer/payee and tracing information for virtual-asset transfers, including self-hosted wallets (AUSTRAC additional virtual-asset obligations).

What the prompt usually looks like

  • Choose “private / self-custody / unhosted wallet” vs another exchange.
  • Sign a non-transactional message, send a tiny exact amount (Satoshi test), upload a screenshot, or tick an ownership declaration.
  • Fill name / country fields for Travel Rule data sharing with other VASPs.

How to spot a fake “verification”

  • Anyone asking for a seed phrase, “message generator” site that needs your recovery words, remote-desktop app, or a payment to “unlock” funds is a scammer.
  • Stay inside your exchange’s official app or website domain. Kraken and others have publicly warned about fake message generators.
  • Optional: check signatures locally with the KeyProof verifier (runs in your browser; no keys uploaded).

FAQ

Did I do something wrong?

Usually no. Ownership checks are a compliance step for transfers involving self-hosted wallets under Travel Rule / transfer-of-funds rules. They are common on Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, Bitpanda, Bitvavo and many others.

Is the exchange trying to take my keys?

A legitimate prompt never asks for seed phrases, recovery words or private keys. Real methods are message signing, a small test deposit, a screenshot of your wallet UI, or an in-app declaration.

How do I finish quickly?

Prefer message signing when offered (no on-chain fee). Otherwise complete the Satoshi / small-deposit test with the exact amount from the exact address. See the guide for your exchange.
