Coinbase: proving you own your self-custody wallet

Coinbase verifies a self-custody wallet with a small deposit test (any chain) or by signing a message (supported networks such as Ethereum). EU users can also link Coinbase Wallet on mobile.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. Coinbase only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.

When Coinbase asks

Where: EU (Transfer of Funds Regulation), Singapore, and other Travel Rule jurisdictions

Threshold: Coinbase does not publish a single threshold in the articles we checked; it says you "may be required" to prove ownership when sending to a self-custody wallet.

Accepted verification methods

MethodStatusDetails
Message signingAcceptedConnect your wallet when prompted, confirm the request comes from coinbase.com, and sign. Available on supported networks such as Ethereum. Coinbase notes WalletConnect does not support message signing for Bitcoin; on Coinbase Exchange the option is ERC-20 only.[1][2][3]
Small deposit test (Satoshi test)AcceptedSend a small, randomly generated, exact amount from the address you want to verify to the Coinbase address shown. Works for any chain. Incomplete tests expire after 48 hours. After verifying one address, supported wallets can optionally upload an xPub so derived addresses are recognised.[1][2][3][4]
Link Coinbase Wallet (EU, mobile)AcceptedEU customers can link Coinbase Wallet to their Coinbase.com account on mobile.[2]
Ownership attestationAcceptedOn Coinbase Exchange (EU), you must attest that you own a self-hosted wallet and then verify it by signature or small deposit test.[5]

Step by step

Small deposit test[1]

  1. When prompted during a send or receive, select Self-custody / personal wallet.
  2. Confirm "It's my wallet".
  3. Choose Small deposit test. (Depending on asset and network, message signing may also be offered.)
  4. Copy the exact amount and receiving address shown.
  5. From the exact wallet address you are verifying, send that exact amount to the address Coinbase gave you. Do not send it from another exchange.
  6. Wait for the transaction to confirm. Coinbase says this usually takes a few minutes, longer if the network is congested.
  7. Look for the in-app notification and confirmation email that your address is verified.

Message signing[2][3]

  1. Choose the signing option when Coinbase asks you to verify the wallet.
  2. Connect your self-custody wallet when prompted.
  3. Check that the request comes from coinbase.com before you approve anything.
  4. Sign the message in your wallet. Signing does not move funds.

Keep the address, the exact message and the signature. Paste them into the KeyProof verifier to check them and save a proof record. Open the verifier →

Common errors and fixes

Small deposit test failed: amount was slightly off

Coinbase must receive the exact amount shown. Even a tiny difference fails the test. Make sure your wallet adds the network fee on top and does not take it out of the amount you send.[3]

Verified one Bitcoin address, but the next withdrawal asks again

Bitcoin wallets rotate addresses. Verification applies only to the address you tested. Send to that same verified address, or (on supported wallets) upload your wallet's xPub after verifying one address so Coinbase can recognise derived addresses. Using an xPub is optional and reveals the account's address set to Coinbase.[3]

Test sent from a different address in the same wallet

Send from the exact address you are verifying. On Bitcoin, use coin control (Sparrow, Electrum) to pick the input that belongs to that address.[3]

Test sent from another exchange

Coinbase says the test should not be sent from another exchange. Send it from your own wallet.[3]

Small deposit test expired (EU)

Incomplete tests expire after 48 hours. Start a new test and send right away.[2]

Test succeeded but the transfer is still incomplete

Compare the transfer's address with the verified address in your confirmation email. If they differ, or the transfer stays stuck, contact Coinbase Support with the transaction ID.[3]

No "sign a message" option for my Bitcoin wallet

Coinbase says WalletConnect does not support message signing for Bitcoin. Use the small deposit test instead.[3]

NEAR small deposit test not available (Coinbase Exchange)

Coinbase lists NEAR as not supported for small deposit tests on Coinbase Exchange.[1]

FAQ

Does signing a message on Coinbase cost gas?

No. Coinbase describes message signing as proving control of your wallet "without moving funds". The small deposit test does cost a network fee.

Can I verify a Bitcoin wallet by signing on Coinbase?

Not with WalletConnect. Coinbase says WalletConnect does not support message signing for Bitcoin, so use the small deposit test.

How long does a Coinbase small deposit test take?

Coinbase says verification usually completes within a few minutes of the transaction confirming. EU tests that are not completed expire after 48 hours.
