eToro: proving you own your self-custody wallet

eToro requires EU Crypto Wallet users to confirm transfers are to or from their own self-hosted wallet. Below €1,000 you usually tick a Notabene declaration. Above €1,000 on supported assets you prove ownership: connect a wallet app (same device) for ETH/ERC-20, or copy-paste a Bitcoin message signature. External wallets must support message signature or WalletConnect.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. eToro only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.
Based on eToro's public Travel Rule page for EU Crypto Wallet users. Other eToro entities or hosted-wallet products may differ. Asset lists and €1,000 cutovers change — check the live page before large transfers.

When eToro asks

Where: EU eToro Crypto Wallet users (Crypto Travel Rule / Notabene). eToro's Travel Rule page states the process applies to EU residents sending or receiving through the eToro Crypto Wallet.

Threshold: Under €1,000: self-hosted wallet declaration via Notabene. Over €1,000 for certain assets (ETH/ERC-20 and BTC flows documented): Proof-of-Ownership via wallet connect/message signature. eToro lists many assets as supported only for amounts under €1,000.

Accepted verification methods

MethodStatusDetails
Self-hosted wallet declaration (Notabene)AcceptedFor sends and receives under €1,000, confirm on Notabene's screen that the counterparty wallet is your own self-hosted wallet, then finish eToro 2FA. Applies when sending or after a receive lands and you Continue.[1]
Proof of Ownership (WalletConnect / message signature)AcceptedFor transfers over €1,000 on documented flows: ETH/ERC-20 — select your wallet service (e.g. MetaMask) installed on the same device, approve connection, then sign the Signature Request. Common errors and fixes

Wallet app not on the same device

For ETH/ERC-20 Proof of Ownership, eToro requires the wallet app installed on the same device as the eToro Crypto Wallet and able to connect to other wallet apps.[1]

Bitcoin wallet cannot sign messages

eToro says ensure your Bitcoin wallet supports message signature before starting. Use a desktop wallet with Sign/Verify if mobile cannot sign.[1]

Transfer declined without information

eToro states that without the required information your transfer may be declined. Finish every Notabene / ownership step shown.[1]

Asset only allowed under €1,000

eToro lists many cryptoassets as supported only for amounts under €1,000. BTC, ETH and listed ERC-20s have fuller support — check eToro's Travel Rule FAQ on that page before sending larger amounts.[1]

FAQ

Can I send to someone else's self-hosted wallet?

eToro's Travel Rule flow asks you to confirm the self-hosted wallet is your own. Their published steps are written for your own wallet; follow in-app policy if you see a different option.

What is Notabene?

eToro describes Notabene as a third-party application that connects with eToro to help verify send/receive transactions for Travel Rule compliance.

Which wallets work?

eToro says your digital wallet must support message signature or WalletConnect. MetaMask is used as the example for EVM; Bitcoin needs a wallet with Sign Message.
