Luno: proving you own your self-custody wallet

Luno asks whether you are sending to yourself or someone else, whether the address is private (self-custody) or hosted by another exchange, and recipient/platform details. Private wallets (MetaMask, Ledger, Trezor examples) are allowed. Sends to unlisted VASPs are blocked until compliance assesses them. Malaysian receives may be held until sender details are submitted.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. Luno only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.
Summarises Luno Help Centre Travel Rule articles for Indonesia, Malaysia and South Africa (updated September 2026 on the pages we checked). Country rules and approved VASP lists change — follow in-app prompts for your verified country.

When Luno asks

Where: Travel Rule currently described for customers verified in Indonesia, Malaysia and South Africa; Nigeria rolling out. Other Luno countries may follow as local law requires.

Threshold: Luno does not publish a single euro/dollar amount on the customer Travel Rule FAQ we checked. You provide Travel Rule details when sending or receiving as prompted for your verified country. Information is collected once per new address.

Luno doesn’t ask for a signature? If support follows up, a signed message from your wallet is stronger evidence of ownership than a checkbox or a screenshot. Check a signature free in your browser and keep a proof record. Nothing leaves your device.

Step by step

Sending crypto (Travel Rule countries)[1][2]

  1. Start a send in the Luno app or website.
  2. Say whether you are sending to yourself or someone else.
  3. Say whether the destination is a private address (you hold the keys — Luno examples include MetaMask, Ledger, Trezor) or hosted on another exchange/platform.
  4. If hosted, pick the recipient's VASP from Luno's approved list for your country. If the platform is not listed, Luno says you cannot send until compliance assesses it — contact support to request assessment.
  5. Enter recipient details accurately (correct spelling). Luno warns misspellings can delay or cancel the transfer without losing the crypto.
  6. Submit. Luno may share your name and, in South Africa and Malaysia, additional identity/address data with the receiving VASP as required by local law; Indonesia currently does not share your information per Luno's FAQ.

Receiving crypto[1][2]

  1. When receiving from another VASP, provide the name of that VASP so Luno can request Travel Rule information.
  2. Private wallets, mining pools and faucets are treated as private addresses — declare them accurately (Luno asks for specific names such as "Ethermine pool" or "F2Pool mining" for those pools).
  3. Malaysia: crypto from an external source may be held until you answer the in-app prompt about the sender (name, nationality, date of birth, or exchange name as requested). Funds stay safe but locked until verification completes.

Common errors and fixes

Destination exchange not on Luno's list

Luno only facilitates sends to approved VASPs/CASPs. Contact support so compliance can assess the VASP; you cannot send to an unlisted platform from the selection menu.[1][2]

Malaysia deposit held

Open the Luno app prompt and submit the requested sender details. Luno says funds remain safe but unavailable until verification finishes.[1][2]

Name misspelled

Provide the correctly spelled legal name. Luno says misspellings delay or cancel the transfer; they do not say the crypto is lost.[1]
