Uphold: proving you own your self-custody wallet
Uphold (Europe) verifies non-custodial wallet ownership through Notabene: Signature Proofs (off-chain message signing) or microtransactions (Satoshi tests). Separately, Travel Rule deposits and withdrawals may ask for sender/beneficiary details. Verification runs in Uphold's flow; KeyProof helps you check a signature locally afterward.
When Uphold asks
Where: Europe / EEA (EUTFR / Travel Rule). Uphold states self-hosted wallet ownership verification currently applies to customers in Europe; outside Europe it is not required at this time per their help article.
Threshold: Jurisdiction-specific. Uphold's developer Travel Rule overview says thresholds are dynamic and Uphold/Notabene decide when self-declaration vs cryptographic proof of ownership is shown. Europe customers may be asked to verify a non-custodial wallet before transfers to self-hosted wallets.
Accepted verification methods
| Method | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Signature Proof (Notabene) | Accepted | Sign an off-chain challenge message with the destination (or sending) wallet's private key. Uphold's Europe help article lists Signature Proofs via Notabene. Developer docs describe messageSigning schemes such as bip-137 and eip-191, typically instant, with no on-chain fee.[1][3] |
| Microtransaction (Satoshi test) | Accepted | Send a small test transaction from the wallet being verified within the time window shown. Uphold's Europe article lists microtransactions as a Notabene method. Developer docs note 10–60 minute processing depending on block confirmation.[1][3] |
| Self-declaration / Travel Rule details | Accepted | Uphold may ask you to attest wallet ownership or provide sender/beneficiary names and whether a wallet is self-hosted or custodial. Developer docs describe self-declaration as the default check in many jurisdictions when cryptographic proof is not mandated.[2][3] |

Step by step
Europe: verify a non-custodial wallet (Signature Proof or Satoshi test)[1]
- When Uphold prompts you to verify a self-hosted (non-custodial) wallet, open the verification flow shown in the app or web (Notabene-powered).
- Choose Signature Proof if offered: connect or use your wallet to sign the off-chain challenge message. Confirm the request is for the exact address you are verifying and that you are not approving a spend.
- Or choose the microtransaction / Satoshi test if offered: from the exact address being verified, send the exact amount to the verification address within the time window.
- Wait for Uphold/Notabene to mark the wallet verified before retrying the deposit or withdrawal.
- Outside Europe, Uphold's help article says you are not required to complete self-hosted wallet verification at this time — follow any in-app prompt for your region.
Keep the address, message and signature from a Signature Proof. Paste them into the KeyProof verifier to re-check locally and save a proof record. Open the verifier →
Travel Rule details on deposits and withdrawals[2]
- For deposits from another exchange, the sending VASP should attach Travel Rule data. If details are missing, the deposit may stay pending or be rejected until information is provided.
- For deposits from a self-hosted wallet, confirm sender details and/or complete ownership verification if prompted. The deposit stays pending until required verification finishes.
- For withdrawals to another exchange, provide beneficiary details (such as the recipient's name) when asked; Uphold shares required Travel Rule information with the receiving VASP.
- For withdrawals to a self-hosted wallet, complete ownership verification when Uphold asks before the send can complete.
Common errors and fixes
Deposit stuck pending after sending from my own wallet
Uphold says deposits from self-hosted wallets may remain pending until you confirm sender details and/or finish ownership verification. Open the pending deposit prompt and complete every field or Signature/Satoshi step shown.[2]
Deposit rejected for Travel Rule
Uphold lists rejection when the sending exchange does not adhere to Travel Rule requirements or information cannot be collected. Retry from a compliant exchange or from a self-hosted wallet (ownership verification may apply).[2]
Withdrawal failed to another exchange
Uphold says a withdrawal may fail if the receiving exchange does not comply with Travel Rule requirements. Withdraw to a Travel Rule–compliant exchange or to a self-hosted address (verification may apply).[2]
Asked for verification outside Europe
Uphold's non-custodial ownership article states the process described applies only to customers in Europe. If you see a different prompt, follow the in-app instructions for your region or contact Uphold support through official channels.[1]
FAQ
Does Uphold ask for my seed phrase?
No legitimate Uphold Signature Proof or Satoshi test needs your seed phrase or private key. Signature Proofs use an off-chain message; Satoshi tests send a small amount from the wallet you control.
Is message signing or a Satoshi test better?
Uphold lists both via Notabene. Signing is usually faster and has no network fee. Use the Satoshi test when your wallet or network cannot sign the challenge.
Do I always need cryptographic proof?
Not always. Uphold's developer docs say self-declaration is the default in many jurisdictions; Proof of Ownership (signing) is required when regulations and your location mandate it. Europe customers should expect ownership verification for self-hosted wallets per the help article.
