Coinmotion: proving you own your self-custody wallet

Coinmotion verifies unhosted wallet addresses with a Sign/Verify message signature pasted into "Signature proof". For assets that do not support that flow (Coinmotion lists LTC, XRP, XLM, ADA) or when signing fails, use Self Declaration on the same device. After a successful check, later transfers to that address skip a new declaration.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. Coinmotion only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.

When Coinmotion asks

Where: Finland / EEA (Travel Rule / Transfer of Funds). Coinmotion's unhosted-wallet article applies when transfers to or from unhosted wallets exceed €1,000.

Threshold: Over €1,000 to or from an unhosted wallet: Coinmotion requires a digital signature (or Self Declaration when signing is unavailable) once per address.

Accepted verification methods

MethodStatusDetails
Signature proof (Sign/Verify)AcceptedDuring a transfer, open Verify, copy Coinmotion's verification message, sign it in your wallet's Sign/Verify function, and paste the signature into the Signature proof field. Coinmotion then verifies the address.[1]
Self DeclarationAcceptedUse when the asset does not support Unhosted Wallet Verification (Coinmotion examples: LTC, XRP, XLM, ADA) or you cannot complete signing. Choose Continue on this device, fill wallet details, and answer the Self Declaration questions.[1]

Step by step

Signature proof[1]

  1. Start a cryptocurrency transfer in Coinmotion as usual.
  2. When the ownership pop-up appears, click the blue Verify button.
  3. Copy the verification message Coinmotion shows for the wallet address.
  4. In your wallet app, open Sign/Verify (or equivalent), paste the message, and sign with the address you are verifying.
  5. Paste the signature into Coinmotion's Signature proof field and submit.
  6. Wait for Coinmotion to verify the address. After success, future transfers to that address do not need another check.

Keep the address, message and signature. You can re-check them in the KeyProof verifier. Open the verifier →

Self Declaration (when signing is unavailable)[1]

  1. Start the transfer and click Verify when prompted.
  2. Click Continue on this device.
  3. Enter the wallet details Coinmotion asks for and complete the Self Declaration questions.
  4. Submit. After Coinmotion accepts the declaration, later transfers to that address skip a new Self Declaration.

Common errors and fixes

Asset cannot complete signature verification

Coinmotion says LTC, XRP, XLM and ADA (and similar cases) use Self Declaration instead of Unhosted Wallet Verification. Choose Continue on this device and finish the declaration.[1]

Asked again for the same address

Coinmotion states verification is once per address. Confirm you are using the exact address that was verified — UTXO wallets can rotate addresses, so a new receive address may need its own check.[1]

Someone asks for my seed phrase to "verify" Coinmotion

Treat it as a scam. Coinmotion's published flow uses Sign/Verify or Self Declaration inside Coinmotion — never share recovery words or private keys.[1]

FAQ

Is verification about the wallet app or the address?

Coinmotion clarifies that verification proves ownership of the address, not the wallet app. Ethereum-style wallets often reuse one address; Bitcoin/Litecoin UTXO wallets can use many.

Do I verify every transfer?

No. Coinmotion says you verify once; later transfers to or from that verified address proceed without a new check.

Does signing move funds?

A Sign/Verify message signature is off-chain. Coinmotion's article describes creating a signature in your wallet and pasting it — it is not a spend transaction.
