VALR: proving you own your self-custody wallet
On every external withdrawal VALR asks for recipient type, full name or company registered name, withdrawal address, wallet type (exchange or self-hosted), and service provider if exchange. Self-hosted wallets (for example MetaMask or Ledger) are allowed after you select that wallet type. Save details in the Wallet Address Book to avoid re-entry; API users should update the Address Book before withdrawing via API.
When VALR asks
Where: South Africa (FIC Directive 9). VALR applies Travel Rule collection on all outgoing crypto to non-VALR addresses from 30 April 2025.
Threshold: No minimum or maximum — VALR says all withdrawals to non-VALR addresses are subject to the Travel Rule.
Accepted verification methods
| Method | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient Travel Rule details | Accepted | Provide recipient type, individual full name or corporate registered name, crypto withdrawal address, wallet type (Exchange or Self-hosted), and service provider from the list (or Other + free-text) when Exchange is selected.[1][2] |
| Wallet Address Book | Accepted | Save addresses with Travel Rule fields so later withdrawals can pick them from a dropdown. Email authorisation plus OTP/2FA when adding; later withdrawals to saved addresses still need 2FA but not the email step.[1][3] |
| Message signing | Not listed | Not described in VALR’s Travel Rule help or South Africa Travel Rule blog we checked.[1][2] |

Step by step
Withdraw to your self-hosted wallet[1][2]
- Start a crypto withdrawal to a non-VALR address.
- Set wallet type to Self-hosted wallet (VALR explicitly says MetaMask or Ledger-style wallets are allowed).
- Enter recipient type and your full legal name (it is your own wallet).
- Submit. VALR processes as fast as compliance rules allow; some withdrawals may be delayed under compliance/risk including Travel Rule.
Save the address for next time[3]
- Open Profile → Wallet Address Book → Add new address.
- Enter network/currency (or a universal network address), Travel Rule recipient fields, and save.
- Authorise via the email link, then OTP/2FA.
- On later withdrawals pick the saved address from the dropdown and confirm with 2FA.
Common errors and fixes

VALR says choose Other and type the exchange/service provider name.[1]
API withdrawal failing after Travel Rule go-live
Update recipient information in the Address Book on web/app before initiating API withdrawals.[1]
Shared-account user cannot edit Address Book
