Nexo: proving you own your self-custody wallet
Nexo asks Travel Rule questions when you withdraw or top up crypto: whether the counterparty is a private wallet or another exchange, whether it is yours or a third party, and sometimes name and address fields. Public FAQ pages describe declaration-style ownership confirmation via Notabene — they do not document Satoshi-test or message-signing steps.
When Nexo asks
Where: Jurisdictions where Nexo applies Travel Rule checks on crypto top-ups and withdrawals (Nexo partners with Notabene)
Threshold: Nexo's Travel Rule FAQ does not publish a single public dollar or euro figure. It says additional information may be requested "in some cases" on top-ups or withdrawals.
Accepted verification methods
| Method | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Travel Rule details + ownership confirmation | Accepted | For withdrawals to a private wallet, say whether the non-custodial wallet belongs to you or a third party. Third-party wallets need the recipient's full legal name and may need country, city and physical address. For exchange destinations, say individual vs company and supply requested location fields. For top-ups, confirm private wallet vs exchange and supply the sender's legal name when the funds are not from you.[1] |

Step by step
Withdraw to a private wallet[1]
- Start a crypto withdrawal in your Nexo account.
- When prompted, specify that the destination is a private (non-custodial) wallet rather than another digital asset exchange.
- Confirm whether the wallet belongs to you or a third party.
- If it is third-party-owned, provide the recipient's full legal name and any country, city or physical address fields Nexo shows.
- Submit the withdrawal. If required Travel Rule information is missing, Nexo says the withdrawal may fail, assets are not transferred, and you are notified by email — then you must start again with complete data.
Top-ups under review[1]
- If a crypto top-up is held for Travel Rule review, open the on-screen prompt in the Nexo platform.
- Specify whether the transfer came from a private wallet or a digital asset exchange account.
- If the sender is not you, supply the sender's full legal name and any additional country, city or address fields requested.
- Submit the details so Nexo can continue processing the top-up.
Common errors and fixes
Withdrawal rejected for Travel Rule
Nexo says failed Travel Rule withdrawals do not move assets and trigger an email. Start a new withdrawal and complete every required field accurately.[1]
Top-up stuck under review
Follow the in-platform prompt to confirm sender and wallet-type details. Nexo may ask for the sender's full legal name and sometimes location fields.[1]
