Gemini: proving you own your self-custody wallet
Gemini verifies self-hosted withdrawal addresses from the Address Book with a Signature Test (via Reown; no transfer, no network fee) or a Small Deposit Test (send at least $1 notional of supported crypto from that exact address to your Gemini deposit address). Withdrawal Protection can add a hold period after verification.
When Gemini asks
Where: EU & EEA (Travel Rule / TFR) and Singapore (MAS Travel Rule). Other Gemini entities may differ.
Threshold: Gemini's EU/EEA and Singapore help articles require proof of control before withdrawing to a self-hosted wallet. They do not publish a single public euro or dollar amount threshold on those pages; follow the prompt for your account.
Accepted verification methods
| Method | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Signature Test (Reown) | Accepted | Connect your external wallet and sign a unique Gemini-generated message. No crypto moves and there is no network fee. EU/EEA network support listed by Gemini: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Zcash, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin. Singapore Signature Test assets listed: BTC, ETH, ERC-20, SOL, SPL.[1][2][3] |
| Small Deposit Test | Accepted | After adding the address to Address Book, send a deposit of at least $1 notional of supported crypto from that exact wallet to your Gemini deposit address. Gemini reviews that the sender matches. Typically up to about 15 minutes for the match; with Withdrawal Protection, whitelisting can take about seven days. EU/EEA Small Deposit Test networks listed: Ethereum, Bitcoin. Singapore also lists ERC-20 and BTC forks (LTC, BCH, DOGE).[1][2][3][4] |
| Address / deposit attestation | Accepted | When adding an address you attest ownership. Separately, Deposit Attestation for incoming funds asks for the sender wallet owner's legal name and country of residence. Gemini says Deposit Attestation is not the same as proving control of a whitelisted withdrawal address.[1][5] |

Step by step
Signature Test (web)[1][2]
- Open Address Book on Gemini web.
- Click Add a self-hosted wallet address and complete the address attestation.
- Under Actions, click Verify and select Signature Test.
- Connect your external wallet (for example a browser extension or hardware wallet flow) and sign the unique message Gemini generates through Reown.
- When the signature verifies, the address status becomes Active, or Hold Period if Withdrawal Protection is enabled.
Keep the address, exact message and signature. You can check them in the KeyProof verifier before you rely on the result. Open the verifier →
Signature Test (mobile)[1][2]
- Update the Gemini mobile app, then open the profile icon → Address Book → Add New.
- Enter Scope, network and the self-hosted wallet address, then confirm the details.
- Tap Verify, select Self-Hosted Wallet, then Signature Test.
- Connect your wallet app or browser extension and complete the signature.
Small Deposit Test[1][3]
- Add the external wallet address in Address Book.
- From that exact address, send a deposit of at least $1 notional of a supported asset to your Gemini deposit address.
- Wait for Gemini to review the deposit. If the sender matches, the address status updates to Active.
- If Withdrawal Protection is on, expect the broader whitelist process to take about seven days even after the test succeeds.
Gemini says Small Deposit Test is not compatible with BTC / BTC-fork wallets that rotate sending addresses unless you can fix the address (for example with coin control). Open the verifier →
Common errors and fixes
Deposit Attestation done, but I still cannot withdraw to the address
Gemini says Deposit Attestation (naming the owner of an incoming sender) is not the same as proving control of a whitelisted withdrawal address. Complete Signature Test or Small Deposit Test on that Address Book entry.[1]
Small Deposit Test fails on Bitcoin / Litecoin because my wallet rotates addresses
Gemini says SDT is not currently compatible with rotating BTC / BTC-fork addresses. Use coin control if your wallet has it, or use Signature Test when the asset is supported.[1][3]
Address shows Hold Period after I verified
If Withdrawal Protection is enabled, Gemini places new addresses in a hold period (its Singapore article describes a 7-day hold). Wait out the hold or check Withdrawal Protection settings.[2][4]
My token is not on the supported deposit/withdrawal list (EU/EEA)
Gemini's EU/EEA Travel Rule article says only transfers of ERC-20, ETH, BTC, SPL and SOL are supported for deposit/withdrawal under that regime; unsupported tokens can still be traded and held but are removed from deposit/withdrawal options.[5]
