Gate: proving you own your self-custody wallet
Gate EU verifies self-hosted wallet control with a Satoshi Test: send the exact amount shown, on the correct network, from the exact address being verified to Gate's verification address within the on-screen time limit. Signing is not documented on the Gate EU pages we checked.
When Gate asks
Where: Gate EU (Gate Technology Ltd, Malta MFSA-authorised CASP) and other Gate entities that apply Travel Rule checks. This guide follows Gate EU's public help center.
Threshold: Gate EU's Travel Rule FAQ and Satoshi Test article do not publish a single public amount threshold on those pages. Verification may be required for deposits from or withdrawals to self-hosted wallets, or when compliance tools request it.
Accepted verification methods
| Method | Status | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Satoshi Test | Accepted | Send the exact verification amount from the exact wallet address to the Gate verification address, on the correct network, before the deadline. Network fees are separate and must not reduce the amount that arrives. Gate reviews the transaction and marks the wallet verified on success.[1][2] |
| Travel Rule transfer details | Accepted | Gate may ask you to confirm whether a transfer involves another VASP or a self-hosted wallet, and may request sender/beneficiary names, institution names, wallet ownership information or source-of-funds details.[2] |
| Message signing | Not listed | Not mentioned in the Gate EU Satoshi Test or Travel Rule FAQ pages we checked.[1][2] |

Step by step
Satoshi Test (self-hosted wallet)[1]
- When depositing from or withdrawing to a self-hosted wallet, select Start Verification if Gate prompts you.
- Review the wallet address being verified, Gate's verification address, the exact amount and the timeframe.
- From the exact address being verified, send that exact amount on the correct network to the Gate verification address before the deadline.
- Return to the verification page, confirm the transaction was completed, and provide any extra information requested.
- Wait for Gate's review. On success the wallet is marked verified and eligible pending transfers can proceed.
Gate says network fees are separate from the verification amount. Make sure the exact required amount arrives. Open the verifier →
Travel Rule details on a transfer[2]
- Confirm whether the counterparty is another crypto exchange / VASP or a self-hosted (private) wallet.
- Provide any requested sender or beneficiary name, institution name and wallet ownership details so they match your verified Gate account.
- If Gate asks for ownership verification of a self-hosted wallet, complete the Satoshi Test flow above.
Common errors and fixes
Verification failed: wrong amount, wrong network or wrong sending address
Gate lists these as failure reasons. Restart verification and send the exact amount from the exact address on the correct network before the deadline.[1]
Verification deadline expired
Gate says the request expires and the wallet is not verified. Start a new attempt and send immediately.[1]
Withdrawal still pending after I sent the test
Gate says transfers can stay pending while verification is reviewed, more compliance checks run or further information is requested. Check the verification status and contact Gate Support if it stalls.[1][2]
Does the Satoshi Test give Gate my keys?
Gate says the Satoshi Test only confirms control of an address and does not give Gate access to your wallet, assets or private keys.[1]
FAQ
Will I need a Gate Satoshi Test every time?
Not necessarily. Gate says a successfully verified wallet may remain verified for future transactions, though additional verification can still be requested for regulation, risk or compliance reasons.
Are there fees for Gate's Satoshi Test?
Gate says blockchain network fees may apply; those fees are charged by the network, not controlled by Gate.
Does Gate document message signing for self-hosted wallets?
Not on the Gate EU Satoshi Test or Travel Rule FAQ pages we checked on 2026-10-27.
