Coincheck: proving you own your self-custody wallet

Before sending crypto, Coincheck requires passkey authentication and a registered destination with service name and recipient type. For personal wallets choose “プライベートウォレット(MetaMask等)”. For yourself, pick recipient type “本人”; for someone else (individual or corporation) enter kana name plus country/region. SMS or passkey confirms new destinations. From 2025-07-09, “other exchange/service” is no longer available — only listed VASPs or private wallet. Japan-yen deposits/withdrawals are unaffected by Travel Rule.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. Coincheck only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.
Based on Coincheck Japanese FAQs (recipient registration updated 2026-08-31; web send updated 2026-10-08; Travel Rule FAQ jurisdictions as of 2026-08-03). UI labels are Japanese — follow the live Coincheck screens.

When Coincheck asks

Where: Japan (Coincheck / Monex Group). Travel Rule via TRUST for notified jurisdictions; private-wallet sends use destination registration fields.

Threshold: Coincheck’s web send FAQ states that Travel Rule destination service name and recipient-type fields are required regardless of send amount. TRUST notifications apply when sending to exchanges in Coincheck’s notified jurisdictions list (table dated as of 2026-08-03 on the Travel Rule FAQ).

Accepted verification methods

MethodStatusDetails
Destination service name + recipient type (Travel Rule fields)AcceptedRegister label, address, service name (listed exchange or プライベートウォレット(MetaMask等)), and recipient type (self / other individual / other corporation). Other-party sends need kana name and country/region. Required on sends regardless of amount per the web send FAQ.[1][2]
TRUST notification to counterpart VASPsAcceptedCoincheck uses Travel Rule Universal Solution Technology (TRUST) to notify required originator/beneficiary items to exchanges in notified jurisdictions under Japan’s amended Act on Prevention of Transfer of Criminal Proceeds.[3]

Coincheck doesn’t ask for a signature? If support follows up, a signed message from your wallet is stronger evidence of ownership than a checkbox or a screenshot. Check a signature free in your browser and keep a proof record. Nothing leaves your device.

Step by step

Register a private-wallet destination (web)[1][2]

  1. Set up passkey authentication first — Coincheck says crypto sends and destination registration require it.
  2. Open 暗号資産を送金, choose the asset, then 追加/編集 → 新規追加.
  3. Enter a label and the exact address. For a personal wallet set サービス名 to プライベートウォレット(MetaMask等).
  4. Set 受取人種別 to 本人 for your own wallet. For someone else, choose individual or corporation and enter kana name plus country/region fields.
  5. Complete passkey (and SMS when shown). New destinations can have a temporary send restriction after registration — wait if the confirm step errors.

Send after the destination is approved[2]

  1. Choose the registered destination, purpose, and amount, then continue.
  2. Review the application screen, accept the confirmations, and finish with passkey authentication.
  3. Track status in send history — application complete does not always mean the chain send finished yet.

Send to a listed Japanese / TRUST exchange[1][3]

  1. Pick the exchange from the service-name dropdown (unlisted VASPs cannot be registered since 2025-07-09).
  2. Complete recipient-type fields accurately so TRUST notification and review can succeed.
  3. Expect delays if fields are wrong — Coincheck warns incorrect entries slow review/registration/send completion.

Common errors and fixes

Cannot select “other exchange/service”

Coincheck disabled that option from 2025-07-09. Use a listed VASP or プライベートウォレット(MetaMask等) only.[1][2]

Send blocked right after adding an address

Newly registered destinations can be time-restricted. Wait, then retry the confirm step.[2]

Wrong network / memo for tagged assets

Follow Coincheck’s per-asset network notes (ETH ERC-20, SOL, TRX, XRP destination tag, etc.). Wrong address or memo cannot be reversed once a TxID exists.[2]
