Bitonic: proving you own your self-custody wallet

Bitonic only allows first-party transfers (to/from yourself). For personal (self-custodial) wallet withdrawals above €1,000 you must prove you control the bitcoin address by uploading a full-screen screenshot/photo of the receive screen, or by signing Bitonic’s message. Verify your residential address once (iDIN, document upload, or photo). Prefer verifying addresses in advance.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. Bitonic only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.

When Bitonic asks

Where: Netherlands / EU (Transfers of Funds Regulation / Travel Rule). Bitonic describes Travel Rule checks for bitcoin deposits and withdrawals.

Threshold: Self-custodial wallet ownership verification (screenshot/photo or message signing) is required for withdrawals to a personal wallet above €1,000. Information sharing with hosted/exchange wallets applies regardless of the €1,000 amount. Residential address verification is also required for withdrawals to personal or hosted wallets.

Accepted verification methods

MethodStatusDetails
Message signingAcceptedSign the message Bitonic provides with the exact bitcoin address you are verifying. Bitonic says popular wallets such as Electrum, Ledger, Trezor and some mobile wallets support this. Paste the signature back per Bitonic’s instructions.[1][3]
Screenshot or photo of walletAcceptedOpen Receive in your wallet and upload a clear full-screen screenshot or photo that shows the bitcoin address. Poor quality can force manual review and delay the withdrawal.[1][2]
Residential address verificationAcceptedRequired for withdrawals to a personal or hosted wallet. Options Bitonic lists: iDIN via your banking app, upload a document showing your residential address, or take a photo of such a document.[1][4]
Hosted-wallet information sharingAcceptedWhen the counterparty is a hosted/exchange wallet, originator/beneficiary details are shared. Bitonic only lists supported exchanges; unsupported exchanges should use your personal wallet as an intermediary.[1]

Step by step

Withdraw to your personal wallet (above €1,000)[1][2][3][5]

  1. Complete residential address verification if Bitonic still asks for it (iDIN, document, or photo).
  2. Start a bitcoin withdrawal to your own self-custodial address.
  3. If the address is not yet verified for withdrawals over €1,000, choose screenshot/photo or message signing.
  4. Screenshot path: open Receive in your wallet, capture the full screen showing the address, upload it, and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Signing path: copy Bitonic’s message, sign it in your wallet for that exact address, paste the signature back.
  6. Tip from Bitonic: verify the address in advance so later withdrawals process faster.

Already-linked addresses still need re-verification for withdrawals over €1,000 unless they were verified by screenshot/photo or message signing. Open the verifier →

Withdraw to / deposit from a hosted exchange wallet[1]

  1. Pick a destination/source exchange from Bitonic’s supported list.
  2. Expect information sharing even below €1,000. If details are missing, Bitonic says the transfer may be suspended until they are provided.
  3. If the exchange is not supported, Bitonic recommends sending via your personal wallet first.

Common errors and fixes

Screenshot rejected or stuck in manual review

Bitonic asks for a clear full-screen capture of the wallet receive screen showing the address. Retake if the image is cropped, blurry or incomplete.[2]

Message signing failed

Confirm you signed Bitonic’s exact message with the exact address being verified. Not every wallet supports signing — Bitonic lists Electrum, Ledger, Trezor and some mobile wallets as common options.[3]

Exchange not on Bitonic’s supported list

Bitonic says unsupported exchanges should be reached via your personal wallet as an intermediary.[1]

FAQ

Can I still buy and sell on Bitonic?

Yes. Bitonic says the Travel Rule only changes the deposit and withdrawal process, not buying, selling or storing bitcoin.

Do third-party sends work?

No. Bitonic says you may only transact to and from yourself (personal or hosted wallets you own).

Does Auto Invest need address verification?

Yes for personal wallets: Bitonic says you must verify the bitcoin address before coins can be sent. Hosted-exchange destinations in older plans were deactivated in favour of personal wallets or your Bitonic account.
