Bitfinex: proving you own your self-custody wallet

Bitfinex collects Travel Rule beneficiary details on withdrawals at or above $1,000. You select the destination VASP from a list (or enter a name and website), or indicate you are withdrawing to your own cold storage. Public help and API docs describe information sharing and beneficiary fields — they do not document a Satoshi test or in-app message-signing ownership flow for unhosted wallets.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. Bitfinex only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-27. Not legal advice.
Bitfinex's public materials describe Travel Rule information collection and VASP selection, not a cryptographic ownership UI. This guide does not invent signing or Satoshi steps. Follow the in-app or API fields Bitfinex shows you.

Accepted verification methods

MethodStatusDetails
Travel Rule beneficiary details / beneficiary_selfAcceptedOn the website or app, select the destination VASP or choose "None of the above" and type a name and website. API withdrawals can set beneficiary_self=true for your own cold storage, or supply dest_firstname / dest_lastname / dest_corp_name for third parties. Bitfinex sends prescribed originator and beneficiary data to Travel Rule solution providers for VASP destinations at or above $1,000.[1][2]
Message signingNot listedNot described in Bitfinex's public Travel Rule help article or Travel Rule API withdraw documentation we checked.[1][2]
Satoshi testNot listedNot described in the Bitfinex articles we checked.[1][2]

Bitfinex doesn’t ask for a signature? If support follows up, a signed message from your wallet is stronger evidence of ownership than a checkbox or a screenshot. Check a signature free in your browser and keep a proof record. Nothing leaves your device.

Step by step

Withdrawal Travel Rule flow (website / app)[1]

  1. Start a cryptocurrency withdrawal on Bitfinex.
  2. If the amount is $1,000 or more, Bitfinex requires Travel Rule information. Below that amount you may still choose to send it.
  3. In the next step, select which VASP you are sending to. If the name is not listed, choose "None of the above" and type a name and website.
  4. Complete any remaining fields Bitfinex shows, then submit the withdrawal.
  5. Check the destination exchange or wallet policy before sending. Bitfinex warns that rejected transfers returned to its hot wallet need a manual recovery process with a recovery fee.

API withdrawals (from 19 February 2025)[2]

  1. Set travel_rule_tos to true when the request supplies Travel Rule data.
  2. Identify the recipient VASP with vasp_did (from Bitfinex's VASP list) or vasp_name.
  3. For your own cold storage or own exchange account, you may set beneficiary_self=true so Bitfinex uses your KYC name, instead of supplying dest_firstname / dest_lastname / dest_corp_name.
  4. For a third-party person or company wallet, supply the matching dest_* name fields.
  5. Non-compliant API withdraw requests are rejected.

Common errors and fixes

Withdrawal rejected after Travel Rule check

Bitfinex notes recipient exchanges or wallets may reject third-party transfers or have their own Travel Rule requirements. Confirm the destination policy, then retry with accurate VASP or beneficiary details.[1]

Funds returned to Bitfinex hot wallet

Bitfinex says a manual recovery process is required and incurs a recovery fee. Contact Bitfinex Support with the transaction details.[1]

API withdraw rejected for missing Travel Rule fields

From 19 February 2025, API withdrawals must include compliant Travel Rule fields. Review Bitfinex's withdraw Travel Rule API document and resubmit.[2]

FAQ

Does Bitfinex document a Satoshi test for my hardware wallet?

Not in the public Travel Rule help article or API Travel Rule withdraw guide we checked on 2026-10-27. Those pages focus on beneficiary / VASP information sharing.

What data is shared?

Bitfinex lists amount, asset, transaction hash, blockchain addresses, and individual or entity name, address and ID details for VASP destinations, made available through third-party Travel Rule services.

Can I withdraw to my own cold storage?

Yes. The API documents beneficiary_self for personal cold storage. On the UI, follow the VASP / destination prompts Bitfinex shows for your case.
