Bitbuy: proving you own your self-custody wallet

Bitbuy does not describe a message-signing or Satoshi test in the articles we checked. Instead, when a send or receive over $1,000 CAD triggers the Travel Rule, you open the pending transaction in Activity, say whether the other wallet is yours or a third party’s, and (for third parties) give the owner’s name and physical address. Your own self-hosted wallet counts as a personal wallet. Mismatched Travel Rule information is a listed reason for a rejected withdrawal.

Never share your seed phrase or private key. Bitbuy only needs a signature, a small test deposit or the details it asks for in its own app. Last checked 2026-10-28. Not legal advice.

When Bitbuy asks

Where: Canada (Bitbuy, a FINTRAC-registered Money Services Business per its help center). Travel Rule under the PCMLTFA and FINTRAC guidance.

Threshold: Bitbuy’s help center says the Travel Rule applies to digital-asset transfers over $1,000 CAD. Once a transfer over that threshold is detected, Bitbuy may ask whether the other wallet is your personal wallet or a third party’s.

Accepted verification methods

MethodStatusDetails
Personal vs third-party wallet declarationAcceptedWhen a transfer over $1,000 CAD is detected, Bitbuy may ask whether the payment is coming from or going to your personal wallet or a third party’s. For a third party you specify business or individual and enter the owner’s first and last name (or organization) and physical address.[1]
Originator / beneficiary information (FINTRAC)AcceptedBitbuy collects the name and address of the originator and beneficiary on virtual-currency transfers over $1,000 CAD, and says date of birth, occupation or nature of business may also be requested when applicable.[2][3]

Bitbuy doesn’t ask for a signature? If support follows up, a signed message from your wallet is stronger evidence of ownership than a checkbox or a screenshot. Check a signature free in your browser and keep a proof record. Nothing leaves your device.

Step by step

Complete a Travel Rule prompt on a withdrawal to your own wallet[1]

  1. Log in to your Bitbuy account.
  2. If the pending transaction is not in Recent activity, open the Activity tab (mobile app: More → Activity).
  3. Select the transaction that triggered the Travel Rule and click Continue.
  4. When asked, indicate that the destination is your personal wallet (a self-hosted wallet you own and operate counts as personal).
  5. Fill out any remaining prompts and finalize the transaction.

Bitbuy’s articles do not ask for a signature, but keeping your own signed-message proof (address + message + signature) is a useful record if support asks follow-up questions. The KeyProof verifier checks it in your browser. Open the verifier →

Sending to someone else’s wallet[1]

  1. Open the pending transaction in Activity and click Continue.
  2. Indicate the wallet belongs to a third party, then say whether it is a business or an individual.
  3. Enter the owner’s first and last name (or organization name) and physical address.
  4. If you do not know these details, ask the wallet owner before continuing. For a business, Bitbuy suggests its website, account manager or support team.

Common errors and fixes

Withdrawal rejected

Bitbuy lists these reasons: invalid address or missing destination tag/memo, an address flagged as high risk, sending to another Bitbuy user, or mismatched Travel Rule information. Funds return to your balance with no fee; check the details and resubmit, or contact support.[2]

Withdrawal stuck pending after a large send

Transfers over $1,000 CAD can trigger a Travel Rule step. Open the transaction in Activity and complete the prompts.[1]

Third-party details unknown

Bitbuy requires the owner’s name and address for third-party wallets and says you may face account restrictions if you do not provide them. Get the details from the wallet owner first.[1]

FAQ

Is my hardware or mobile wallet a “personal wallet” on Bitbuy?

Yes, if you own and operate it. Bitbuy defines a third-party wallet as one operated and owned by someone other than you. Your own account at another exchange also counts as personal.

What amount triggers the Travel Rule on Bitbuy?

Bitbuy’s help center says transfers over $1,000 CAD.

Does Bitbuy ask me to sign a message?

Not in the help articles we checked. The flow is a declaration (personal vs third party) plus name and address for third parties.
